Maxwelltown High School Trip to Lake Garda, Italy – Post Event Report
On Saturday 3rd June Maxwelltown High School Musicians departed for their Music tour of Italy. Sun was shining and the group were in good spirits. After leaving the school at 8am on the Saturday morning we made our way down to Dover to catch the ferry to Calais. The musicians arrived in Vallio Terme, Italy, late afternoon and used the remainder of the evening to settle in and unpack and of course enjoy the lovely weather.
On Monday morning after breakfast, we headed off on the coach to Salo where we were boarding the boat for a trip across the lake itself. The sun was shining and it was lovely on the boat. After an hour we arrived in Garda where we had a bit of free time to explore the area and do some shopping. The coach then took us to nearby Bardolino where we had lunch at a pizza restaurant. Shortly after this we got back on the boat for the return crossing back to Salo where the coach met the group to take us back to the hotel. After dinner it was a quick change and off to our first concert venue at Sirmionie. Unfortunately at the same time the heavens opened and our concert was called off at the last minute. This then gave the pupils and staff some extra free time to explore Sirmionie and try out the ice cream.
On Tuesday morning we headed off to the bustling town of Verona famous for Romeo and Juliet. The groups went to visit Juliet’s balcony with some pupils even getting their picture taken there. Everyone had a great time wandering some of the little market stalls before we made our lunch stop. What else could it be but …pizza. After a short walk back past the famous Amphitheatre in Verona, we walked round the town centre and had an ice cream to cool off. It was then back to the coach to head back to the hotel to get ready for the evening concert. After another delicious meal in the hotel, we headed off for our second concert, this time to Toscolano Moderno. The sky looked very dark and just as we were setting up the heavens opened. However, we were under a marquee this time so the concert went ahead as planned. Due to the weather the audience was small but the pupils performed well despite this.
On Wednesday the sun was shining once again when we woke up this morning which made our day at Gardaland theme park even better. The pupils had a great time going on all of the rides. Most of the staff were happy to hold the jackets and watch. The group all met up for lunch at one of the many restaurants in the park. After another few hours of rollercoasters etc we met back at the coach to head home to the hotel. We got changed into our concert gear and then had another lovely meal at the hotel. The last concert was at Gardone Riviera. The weather was perfect and the setting for the last concert of the tour was idyllic. The concert was well received and the audience showed their appreciation and support. Happy and tired, we boarded the coach and headed back to the hotel.
On Thursday cases were packed and it was time to make our way home after a superb trip. As we weren’t leaving until mid-afternoon, we enjoyed some free time at the hotel. Some members of the group walked down to the village. Around 3pm, we boarded the coach and bade farewell to the Hotel Parco della Fonte.
